The amfAR Gala, otherwise known as 'Cinema Against AIDS', is an annual benefit event held at the Cannes Film Festival to raise both money and awareness for the fight against AIDS. The 22nd annual event raised over $30 million on the night, and to date has raised more than $140 million for amfAR's AIDS research programs and the search for a cure.
Founded in 1985, amfAR (American Foundation for AIDS Research) is dedicated to ending the global AIDS epidemic through innovative research. Everyday more than 5,700 people contract HIV, which is nearly 240 people every hour, with currently more than 35 million people around the world living with HIV and 3.2 million of those people being under the age of 15. Since the beginning of the pandemic, nearly 78 million people have contracted HIV and close to 39 million have died of AIDS-Related causes.
